VKXR is a VR layer for Cemu. It turns each frame of a supported Wii U title into two, so Mario Kart 8 reads as depth instead of a picture on a wall.

Live demo
Look at it in stereo
This is the same trick VKXR applies to a game: one scene, rendered once per eye. Drag the crystal, switch on both eyes, or put it in your headset.

Checking for a headset…
This live demo needs WebGL.
Everything else on the page still works.
The idea
The game was never built for this.
Mario Kart 8 shipped for a console that predates consumer VR. There is no stereo mode, there never will be, and the emulator that runs it today still draws a flat screen.
VKXR sits inside Cemu's renderer and splits each frame in two, timing them to your headset. You keep the game you already own, running the way it always has — and you drive from the seat rather than watching from the couch.
Unofficial and independent. No game files, ROMs, textures or binaries are distributed with VKXR — you supply your own copy of the game and Cemu.
Why people keep it installed
Everything you want, nothing to manage
-
01
Depth, not a flat screen
Every frame is split per eye and timed to your headset, so the track reads as a space you are inside rather than an image you are facing.
-
02
Runs inside Cemu
VKXR is a Vulkan layer. It attaches to the emulator you already run, instead of asking you to set up a second renderer beside it.
-
03
Bring your own copy
The download contains the layer and nothing else. No game files, no assets — you supply the game you already own and the emulator you already use.
-
04
Console controls, mapped
Analog triggers, console-style layouts and generic gamepads all work, with bindings you can change after install without rebuilding anything.
-
05
Reversible in one delete
Add the layer's folder, launch, delete the folder. No installer, no registry writes and no administrator rights.
How it works
Running in about a minute
-
1
Set up Cemu and your game
Have Cemu working with a supported title, using its Vulkan renderer, before you start.
-
2
Add the VKXR layer
Copy the layer into place. No installer, no administrator rights, nothing written elsewhere.
-
3
Launch in VR
Start the game with your headset connected. The layer picks up the renderer and presents in stereo.
Supported titles
What works today
Support is built one title at a time. These are the games VKXR has been written for — other Wii U titles will not work.
- Mario Kart 8 Supported The primary target
- Super Mario 3D World In progress Second title in development
- Other Wii U titles Not supported Support is per game, not universal
What you need
- Windows 10 & 11 (64-bit) Supported The main platform
- Cemu with the Vulkan renderer Required VKXR is a layer, not an emulator
- Your own copy of the game Required Nothing is bundled or redistributed
- An OpenXR runtime Supported VDXR, Virtual Desktop, SteamVR
- Mac & Linux Not planned Windows-only for now
Questions
Before you download
Do I need to own the game?
Yes. VKXR distributes no game files, ROMs, textures or assets of any kind. You supply your own copy of the game and your own Cemu install.
Which games are supported?
Mario Kart 8 is supported today. Super Mario 3D World is in development. Support is written per title, so other Wii U games will not work yet.
Do I need Cemu first?
Yes. VKXR is a layer for Cemu and does nothing on its own — it needs a working Cemu install with a supported title running on the Vulkan renderer.
Is this official or endorsed?
No. It is an independent, unofficial, non-commercial project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or supported by Nintendo, Cemu, or any headset or runtime vendor.
Is it free?
Yes. It is open source with no account, no subscription and no telemetry.
Will it slow the game down?
It is built to stay under roughly two percent of your processor, and it works inside the frame Cemu already renders rather than alongside it.
Does it work with my headset?
If your headset runs on Windows through an OpenXR runtime, VKXR can present to it — including the runtimes most people already have installed.
Will this get me banned online?
Treat online play as unsupported and at your own risk. The game is being modified at runtime, and nobody can guarantee how an online service will react to that. If you care about your online standing, play offline.
How do I remove it?
Delete the layer's folder. That is the whole process — nothing is written to the registry or anywhere else on your system.

Pick your Pit Crew level
Support funds testing and compatibility work. Every level earns a verified Pit Crew card and puts your feedback in the supporter review queue.
Donation policy: Contributions are voluntary and final; VKXR does not offer refunds except where required by law. Donations do not purchase software, features, or guaranteed access. Square processes payments. For receipt or payment-processing help, contact Square Support. We are a small project without a customer-service department; feature requests are reviewed as resources allow.
Supporter requests are seriously reviewed first, but no donation purchases a feature, schedule, beta place, or product access. Every request remains subject to feasibility, safety, and project scope.
Secure checkout opens on Square. VKXR never sees your card details. Card issuers may still handle payment disputes under their rules.
